The short answer
- Very large runs of one design: a self-adhesive label or shrink sleeve from a label converter is usually the cheapest per bottle.
- Glass at very high volume, built to last: screen printing or fired ceramic decoration, arranged with the bottle maker or a decorator.
- Short runs, launches, gifting, many versions: direct digital UV printing onto the bottle, with no plates or screens.
- Your own production line printing every day: a cylindrical UV printer in house.
The four methods compared
| Method | Best for | Set-up per design | Look | Who does it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-adhesive label | High volume, frequent price or info changes | Plates or digital set-up; minimums apply | A label on a bottle | Label converters |
| Shrink sleeve | Full-body colour on irregular shapes | Printing cylinders or digital; minimums apply | Glossy film, edge to edge | Flexible packaging |
| Screen / ceramic | Premium glass at volume | A screen per colour | Ink in or on the glass | Glass makers & decorators |
| Direct UV print | Samples, short runs, personalisation | None; one bottle is possible | Ink on the glass, 360°, can be raised | Sun Studio (service) · LSINC printers (machine) |
Questions that decide it
How many bottles per design?
Labels, sleeves and screens all have a set-up cost per design, so the price per bottle falls with quantity. Direct digital printing has no set-up per design, which is why it wins at small quantities and when every bottle is different, such as names on corporate gifts.
Will the bottle be filled, washed or handled with alcohol?
Perfume and fragrance are hard on printed decoration. Whatever method you choose, ask for a rub test with the actual fragrance on a sample bottle. For drinkware, ask what wash testing has been done and on which glass.
Do you want people to feel it?
A label is flat. Direct UV printing can build ink up into raised logos and texture, and screen printing gives a slight relief. If touch matters, see a physical sample.
What to send whoever you choose
- A real bottle, or several if the glass colour varies
- Artwork as vector (PDF, AI or SVG), or the best image you have
- Quantity per design and the date you need them
- Where the bottle goes next: filling line, gift box, retail shelf
